Convert On Demand payers to Auto Collect

Optional agent settings that move customers onto Auto Collect (direct debit or card on file) after an On Demand payment.

Written by Chris Carty

Convert On Demand payers to Auto Collect is a set of optional settings on a collection agent (previously called Encourage direct debit usage). After a customer pays an On Demand request, you can convert them to Auto Collect so future payments are collected automatically, either by direct debit or by charging a saved card.

Why use it

It's a gentle way to move customers onto automatic payments without forcing it. They pay the first request however suits them, then opt in to automatic collection for everything after that. That means less chasing for you and fewer missed payments.

How to turn it on

  1. Go to console.adfin.com/collection-agents and open or create an agent whose preferred payment method is On Demand.

  2. Click Customise payment options.

  3. Under Convert On Demand payers to Auto Collect, turn on one or both of the options below.

Save card details for future payments

When the customer pays by card, they're asked to save their card for future use. Future payments are then charged to the card on file automatically.

Set up a direct debit mandate

After the customer has completed their On Demand payment, they're prompted to set up a direct debit mandate. Future payments are then collected by direct debit.

Use both together

You can turn on both options, so customers save their card and set up a direct debit in the same flow. This gives you a backup payment method.

For example, if direct debit is your primary Auto Collect method and a direct debit collection fails, Adfin can automatically try charging the card on file instead. To set this up, choose your fallback under If an Auto Collect collection attempt fails in the same panel.

Related Auto Collect settings

In the same Customise payment options panel, under Auto Collect payment options, you can also choose:

  • Primary Auto Collect payment method: direct debit (the default) or card.

  • Which payments should be moved to Auto Collect once authorised: New and existing payments, or New payments only.

  • If an Auto Collect collection attempt fails: what Adfin should do next, such as trying the card on file.

These settings apply at the agent level. You can override them for an individual customer or invoice where you need to.
