Maximum transaction limits
When you sign up to Adfin, your account comes with pre-set payment limits for each payment method. These limits depend on your company type:
Sole trader:
£2,000 (direct debit), £10,000 (card), £20,000 (pay by bank)
All other companies:
£5,000 (direct debit), £50,000 (card), £20,000 (pay by bank)
These limits are in place because different business types carry different levels of risk for each payment method. They set the range available to you, but it’s the limit configured on a customer’s agent that actually applies to their payments (see below).
Adjusting payment limits
Payment limits are configured per customer agent, alongside your other agent skills. Each customer uses whatever is set on their own agent, so if you run more than one agent you may need to update several.
Changing limits on a customer agent
Go to Customer agents.
Select the agent you want to update.
Under Skills, find Payment limits and adjust the sliders for each payment method.
You can reduce the limits for direct debits and card payments. Pay by bank cannot be reduced.
Please note, it is not currently possible to apply payment limits by card type, your chosen payment limit will apply across all standard, premium and super premium cards.
This applies to every customer assigned to that agent. If you run more than one agent, repeat this for each agent you’d like updated, increasing a limit on one agent doesn’t affect any other.
Changing limits for one customer
Navigate to the Customers view in the sidebar.
Click on the specific customer to open their customer drawer.
Select the Control agent tab.
Under Payment limits, adjust the sliders for that customer.
Note: these changes apply only to this customer. Everyone else on the same agent is unaffected.
What happens if a payment request exceeds the limit?
For Auto Collect Payments (direct debit): You won't be able to collect the payment automatically. Instead, you'll see an option to send an On Demand payment request for that specific payment.
For On Demand payments: if the amount exceeds all your payment limits, we'll automatically show your customer bank details on the payment page so they can pay you directly. Once they've paid, they can select 'I've made this payment' to let you know, but this doesn't mark the invoice as paid. You'll still need to check your bank and mark it as paid yourself.
Need higher limits?
If you'd like to increase the limits for a specific payment method on your account, reach out to our support team via live chat (the Get Help button in the bottom left of the Adfin console) and we'll be happy to review and assist.
Increasing your account-level limit doesn’t automatically raise the limit on any customer agent you’ve already set up. You’ll also need to go to each agent (or the individual customer, if you’ve overridden it there) and update its Payment limits skill to match, otherwise payments will still be capped at the old figure.
For more on the direct debit limit specifically, see Can I increase my direct debit payment limit?.
